Sonographer Work Summary

Felton PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Felton PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Felton PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Felton PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Felton PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Felton PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Felton home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Felton PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Felton PA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Felton PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Felton PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Felton healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Felton PA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Felton PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
