Sonogram Tech Work Description

Halifax PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Halifax PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Halifax PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Halifax PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Halifax PAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Halifax PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Halifax home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Halifax PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Halifax PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Halifax PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Halifax PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Halifax medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Halifax PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Halifax PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Halifax, Pennsylvania

Halifax is a borough in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. Halifax was incorporated as a borough on May 29, 1785. It is situated at the confluence of Armstrong Creek and the Susquehanna River. The population was 841 at the 2010 census.[3] It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Fort Halifax was located along the Susquehanna River near the present borough. It was a temporary stronghold for the Pennsylvania colonial militia from 1756 to 1757, during the French and Indian War. Prior to settlement by Europeans the area was inhabited by North American Indians, presumably Susquehannocks, evidenced by frequent unearthing of tools and arrowheads by local residents and farmers.

The Legislative Route 1 Sycamore Allee is located along both sides of the road south of Halifax and on the east side of the road north of Halifax; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.[4]
