Sonographer Occupation Summary

Hyde PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hyde PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Hyde PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Hyde PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Hyde PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hyde PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hyde home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Hyde PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Hyde PA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Hyde PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Hyde PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Hyde health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Hyde PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hyde PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
