Sonographer Work Summary

Langhorne PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Langhorne PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Langhorne PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Langhorne PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Langhorne PAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Langhorne PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Langhorne home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Langhorne PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Langhorne PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Langhorne PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Langhorne PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Langhorne health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Langhorne PA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Langhorne PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

The name "Langhorne" is used broadly to describe the majority of surrounding Middletown Township, which for the most part uses Langhorne's ZIP code of 19047. Sesame Place, while physically located in surrounding Middletown Township, has Langhorne as its mailing address. Langhorne also includes the northeastern part of Lower Southampton Township, which uses the ZIP code 19053.

Langhorne began in the 17th century when Jack Alexander built his house in the area. The road from Bristol grew into a very important transportation center between Trenton and Philadelphia in the later 18th century and 19th century. Langhorne eventually became the stagecoach transportation hub of Bucks County, transporting people between Trenton and Philadelphia and was then known as Four Lanes End, later known as Richardsons Corner.

The first mention of Attleborough was recorded on a deed in the Recorder's Office, Deed Book 6, page 210, 7 November 1737. Isaac Hicks laid out a plan for "Washington's Square in Attleborough" in November 1783. Historian William J. Buck wrote "A resident of the place has informed me that this name is of local origin; that a William Richardson Atlee (son of Colonel Samuel Atlee of the Revolutionary Army), a lawyer and son-in-law of General Wayne, resided here about 1790 or perhaps a little earlier. A fire engine was ordered to be made, for which £50 had been raised. When it was finished, word was sent from Philadelphia inquiring what name they wanted it called. Someone suggested that, as Mr. Atlee had been one of the principal contributors, it should be called after him. When the engine arrived, it was found to have painted on its sides Atleebury, which still to be seen. Shortly afterwards a post office was established here, when it was called Attleborough, a slight change from the original." However, the post office was not established until 1 April 1806, Richard Croasdale, the first postmaster.[3]
