Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Lewisville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Lewisville PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Lewisville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Lewisville PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lewisville PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lewisville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Lewisville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lewisville PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lewisville PA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lewisville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Lewisville PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Lewisville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Lewisville PA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Lewisville PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Pennsylvania Route 841 (PA 841) is a state highway in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The route runs from the Maryland border in the Lewisville section of Elk Township, where it continues as Maryland Route 213 (MD 213), north to PA 82 in the Doe Run section of West Marlborough Township. The route heads through rural areas of southwestern Chester County on a two-lane undivided road. PA 841 passes through West Grove, where it has an interchange with U.S. Route 1 (US 1). PA 841 was first assigned to an unpaved road running from Springdell to PA 82 in 1928. The route was extended south to its current terminus in 1937 and was completely paved by 1940.

PA 841 begins at the Maryland border in the community of Lewisville in Elk Township, Chester County, where the road continues south into that state as MD 213. From the state line, the route heads north on two-lane undivided Chesterville Road, intersecting the southern terminus of PA 472 a short distance past the state line. The road continues north through a mix of farms and woods with some homes, crossing the Big Elk Creek into New London Township. The route turns to the east and enters Franklin Township, where it curves to the northeast. PA 841 comes to an intersection with PA 896 and continues through rural areas with some residences. In the community of Chesterville, the route turns northwest onto Wickerton Road. PA 841 curves to the north and heads into London Grove Township as it continues through rural land with increasing residential subdivisions. The road enters the borough of West Grove and becomes Prospect Avenue, where it is lined with homes. In the center of town, the route passes a few businesses and crosses an East Penn Railroad line. PA 841 turns east onto Evergreen Street and curves northeast past residences and commercial establishments. The route splits from Evergreen Street by heading north onto Chatham Road.[2][3]

PA 841 leaves West Grove for London Grove Township again and comes to an interchange with the US 1 freeway. The road continues into a mix of farmland and woodland with occasional homes. In the community of Chatham, the route turns east onto London Grove Road and comes to a junction with PA 41. Past PA 41, PA 841 turns north onto Coatesville Road and continues north through agricultural areas with a few homes, reaching an intersection with PA 926. Upon crossing PA 926, the road heads into West Marlborough Township on North Chatham Road and makes a curve to the northwest through farmland and woods. The route intersects the western terminus of PA 842 and makes a curve to the north before bending to the northeast. PA 841 continues north to the community of Springdell, where it makes a sharp curve to the east. The route curves northeast through farmland and continues to its northern terminus at PA 82 in the community of Doe Run.[2][3]
