Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Lititz PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Lititz PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Lititz PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Lititz PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Lititz PAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Lititz PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lititz home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Lititz PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lititz PA area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Lititz PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Lititz PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Lititz medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Lititz PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lititz PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Lititz, Pennsylvania

Lititz was founded by members of the Moravian Church in 1756 and was named after a castle (mentioned form of name is German; Czech name of this castle is Litice) in Bohemia near the village of Kunvald where the ancient Bohemian Brethren's Church had been founded in 1457. The roots of the Moravian Brethren's Church date back to the ancient Bohemian Brethren's Church.

For a century, only Moravians were permitted to live in Lititz. Until the middle of the 19th century, only members of the congregation could own houses; others were required to lease. The lease-system was abolished in 1855, just five years before the beginning of the Civil War. More information can be found in the book A Brief History of Lititz Pennsylvania by Mary Augusta Huevener, published in 1947.

During a part of the American Revolution, the Brethren's House, built in 1759, was used as a hospital. A number of soldiers died and were buried here. Lititz is also home to Linden Hall School, the oldest all-girls boarding school in the United States. Located adjacent to the Moravian Church on 47 acres (19 ha) of land, Linden Hall School was founded by the Moravians in 1746, a decade before the borough was incorporated.[4]
