Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Mont Alto PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mont Alto PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mont Alto PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Mont Alto PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Mont Alto PAAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mont Alto PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Mont Alto home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Mont Alto PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mont Alto PA area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mont Alto PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Mont Alto PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Mont Alto medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Mont Alto PA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mont Alto PA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
