Brandy Camp PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Brandy Camp PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Brandy Camp PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Brandy Camp PA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Brandy Camp PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Brandy Camp PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Brandy Camp home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Brandy Camp PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Brandy Camp PA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Brandy Camp PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Brandy Camp PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Brandy Camp medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Brandy Camp PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Brandy Camp PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Battle of Brandy Station

The Battle of Brandy Station, also called the Battle of Fleetwood Hill, was the largest predominantly cavalry engagement of the American Civil War, as well as the largest ever to take place on American soil.[3] It was fought on June 9, 1863, around Brandy Station, Virginia, at the beginning of the Gettysburg Campaign by the Union cavalry under Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton against Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate cavalry.

Pleasonton launched a surprise dawn attack on Stuart's cavalry at Brandy Station. After an all-day fight in which fortunes changed repeatedly, the Federals retired without discovering Gen. Robert E. Lee's infantry camped near Culpeper. This battle marked the end of the Confederate cavalry's dominance in the East. From this point in the war, the Federal cavalry gained strength and confidence.

The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia streamed into Culpeper County, Virginia, after its victory at Chancellorsville in May 1863. Under the leadership of Gen. Robert E. Lee, the troops massed around Culpeper preparing to carry the war north into Pennsylvania. The Confederate Army was suffering from hunger and their equipment was poor. Lee was determined to strike north to capture horses, equipment, and food for his men. His army could also threaten Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, and encourage the growing peace movement in the North. By June 5, two infantry corps under Lt. Gens. James Longstreet and Richard S. Ewell were camped in and around Culpeper. Six miles northeast of Culpeper, holding the line of the Rappahannock River, Stuart bivouacked his cavalry troopers, screening the Confederate Army against surprise by the enemy.[4]
