Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Newmanstown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Newmanstown PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Newmanstown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Newmanstown PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Newmanstown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Newmanstown home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Newmanstown PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Newmanstown PA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Newmanstown PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Newmanstown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Newmanstown health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Newmanstown PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Newmanstown PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
