Northumberland PA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Northumberland PA, the next step is to begin the procedure of selecting a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that some states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your options. But exactly where does one begin? A number of students will start by looking for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional critical factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in depth later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Northumberland PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Northumberland PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Northumberland PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Northumberland PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Northumberland PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Northumberland PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Northumberland home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Northumberland PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Northumberland PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Northumberland PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Northumberland PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Northumberland healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Northumberland PA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Northumberland PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Northumberland County, Pennsylvania

Northumberland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94,528.[1] Its county seat is Sunbury.[2] The county was formed in 1772 from parts of Lancaster, Berks, Bedford, Cumberland, and Northampton Counties and named for the county of Northumberland in northern England. Northumberland County is a fifth class county according to the Pennsylvania's County Code.[3]

Among its famous residents, Joseph Priestley, the Enlightenment chemist and theologian, left England in 1796 due to religious persecution and settled on the Susquehanna River. His former house (originally purchased by chemists from Pennsylvania State University after a colloquium that founded the American Chemical Society[4]) is a historical museum.[5]

Before European settlement the area was inhabited by the Akhrakouaeronon or Atrakouaehronon, a subtribe of the Susquehannock. By 1813 the area once comprising the sprawling county of Northumberland had been divided over time and allotted to other counties such that lands once occupied by Old Northumberland at its greatest extent are now found in Centre, Columbia, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Union, Clearfield, Clinton, Montour, Bradford, Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Tioga, Potter, McKean, Warren, Venango, Snyder, and Schuylkill Counties.
