Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Woodward PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Woodward PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Woodward PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Woodward PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Woodward PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Woodward PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Woodward home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Woodward PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Woodward PA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Woodward PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Woodward PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Woodward medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Woodward PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Woodward PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
