Greenville RI sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Greenville RI, the next step is to start the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the appropriate training to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each school in order to assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? A number of individuals will begin by looking for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location must be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are available.

Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Greenville RI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Greenville RI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Greenville RI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Greenville RI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Rhode Island or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Greenville RIAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Greenville RI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Greenville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Greenville RI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Greenville RI area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Greenville RI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Greenville RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Greenville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Greenville RI residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Greenville RI area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
