Tiverton RI ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Tiverton RI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Tiverton RI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Tiverton RI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Rhode Island or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Tiverton RIAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Tiverton RI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Tiverton home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Tiverton RI ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Tiverton RI area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Tiverton RI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Tiverton RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Tiverton healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Tiverton RI residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Tiverton RI area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
