Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Duncan SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Duncan SC hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Duncan SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Duncan SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Carolina or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Duncan SCAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Duncan SC hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Duncan home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Duncan SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Duncan SC area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Duncan SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Duncan SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Duncan medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Duncan SC home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Duncan SC area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
