Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Eastover SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Eastover SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Carolina or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Eastover SCAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Eastover SC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Eastover home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Eastover SC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Eastover SC area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Eastover SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Eastover SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Eastover health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Eastover SC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Eastover SC area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
