Salley SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Salley SC clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure

  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Salley SC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Salley SCAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Salley SC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Salley home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to ask Salley SC ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Salley SC area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Salley SC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Salley SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Salley health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Salley SC residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Salley SC area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
