Sonographer Work Description

Presho SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Presho SD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Presho SD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Presho SD hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in South Dakota or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Presho SDAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Presho SD hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Presho home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Presho SD ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Presho SD area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Presho SD health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Presho SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Presho medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Presho SD home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Presho SD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
