Sonographer Job Summary

Pringle SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Pringle SD hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Pringle SD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Pringle SD hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in South Dakota or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pringle SDAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Pringle SD hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Pringle home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Pringle SD ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pringle SD area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pringle SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Pringle SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Pringle healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Pringle SD home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pringle SD area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
