Sonogram Tech Job Description

La Vergne TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in La Vergne TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

La Vergne TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through La Vergne TN clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local La Vergne TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your La Vergne home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of La Vergne TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with La Vergne TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the La Vergne medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their La Vergne TN home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the La Vergne TN area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
