Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Lebanon TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Lebanon TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Lebanon TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Lebanon TN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you elect to work in.

student attending online sonography class in Lebanon TNAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lebanon TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Lebanon home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Lebanon TN area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Lebanon TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have partnerships with Lebanon TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Lebanon health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Lebanon TN home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lebanon TN area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
