Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Linden TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Linden TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Linden TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Linden TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Linden TNAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Linden TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Linden home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Linden TN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Linden TN area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Linden TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Linden TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Linden healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Linden TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Linden TN area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
