Loudon TN sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Loudon TN, it’s time to begin the process of choosing a school. To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the proper education to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you research each program in order to evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? A number of individuals will begin by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internships. These and other qualifications will be discussed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s review what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are offered.

Sonographer Occupation Description

Loudon TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Loudon TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Loudon TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Loudon TN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Loudon TNAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Loudon TN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Loudon home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Loudon TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Loudon TN area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Loudon TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Loudon TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Loudon healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Loudon TN home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Loudon TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
