Pleasant View TN sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Pleasant View TN, the next step is to start the process of selecting a college. First, you need to find the ideal program that will furnish the necessary instruction to become a qualified professional. So it’s very important that you research each school so that you can assess and compare your options. But just where does one start? Most potential students will start by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location need to be taken into account when making a decision, but there are other critical factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this article. But to start with, let’s discuss what an ultrasound tech does and the degrees and online training programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Pleasant View TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Pleasant View TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Pleasant View TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Pleasant View TN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pleasant View TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pleasant View TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Pleasant View home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Pleasant View TN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pleasant View TN area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pleasant View TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Pleasant View TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Pleasant View medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Pleasant View TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pleasant View TN area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
