Sonographer Job Description

Puryear TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Puryear TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Puryear TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Puryear TN clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Puryear TNAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Puryear TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Puryear home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Puryear TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Puryear TN area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Puryear TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Puryear TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Puryear medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Puryear TN residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Puryear TN area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
