Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Savannah TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Savannah TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Savannah TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Savannah TN clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Tennessee or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Savannah TNAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Savannah TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Savannah home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Savannah TN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Savannah TN area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Savannah TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Savannah TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Savannah health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Savannah TN residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Savannah TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

The city's original name was "Rudd's Ferry", named for James Rudd, an early settler who established a ferry at the site in the early 1820s. Rudd's Ferry was later purchased by a wealthy landowner, David Robinson. The city was renamed "Savannah" after Savannah, Georgia, the hometown of Rudd's wife, Elizabeth.[1]

Hardin County was the site of the 1862 Battle of Shiloh (also known as the "Battle of Pittsburg Landing") during the Civil War. The battleground site is 10 miles (16 km) southwest of the city of Savannah. Union General Ulysses S. Grant commandeered the Cherry Mansion just off the city square for use as a headquarters during the battle.

Pickwick Landing State Park is 12 miles (19 km) south of Savannah. Originally a steamboat stop, the Tennessee Valley Authority bought the site in the 1930s during the Great Depression and constructed a dam so electricity could be generated. In 1969, Tennessee bought 681 acres (276 ha) from the TVA and made it a state park.[9]
