Sonographer Occupation Summary

Henefer UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Henefer UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Henefer UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Henefer UT clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Utah or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Henefer UTAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Henefer UT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Henefer home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Henefer UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Henefer UT area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Henefer UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Henefer UT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Henefer medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Henefer UT home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Henefer UT area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
