Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Henrieville UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Henrieville UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Henrieville UT hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Utah or whatever state you choose to practice in.

So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Henrieville UT outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Henrieville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are looking at, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Henrieville UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Henrieville UT area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Henrieville UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Henrieville UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Henrieville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Henrieville UT home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Henrieville UT area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
