Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Bent Mountain VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Bent Mountain VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Bent Mountain VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Bent Mountain VA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bent Mountain VAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bent Mountain VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Bent Mountain home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Bent Mountain VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bent Mountain VA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bent Mountain VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Bent Mountain VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bent Mountain health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Bent Mountain VA home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bent Mountain VA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Bent Mountain, Virginia

Bent Mountain is an unincorporated community in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. Bent Mountain is located on U.S. Route 221 13.6 miles (21.9 km) southwest of Roanoke. Bent Mountain has a post office with ZIP code 24059.[2][3]

The community of Bent Mountain sits, as the name implies, on top of the large and fertile Bent Mountain Plateau. It is located in the extreme Southwest corner of Roanoke County and is in close proximity to neighboring Floyd, Franklin, and Montgomery counties. The geographic borders of the mountain are also partially located in Floyd County, which has inspired the annual "Bent Mountain Brawl" Benefit Game between the Cave Spring Knights and the Floyd County Buffaloes.

The roads through Bent Mountain are also historic. "The Salem and Bent Mountain Turnpike Company was charted in 1840 to build a road from Salem, Virginia across Twelve O'clock Knob to Back Creek and thence to the top of Bent Mountain. The road was long delayed in construction, but the route planned was eventually used, and the road is now a hard surfaced state highway." Part of this road followed the famous Trader's Path.[5]
