Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Parksley VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Parksley VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Parksley VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Parksley VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Parksley VAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Parksley VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Parksley home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Parksley VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Parksley VA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Parksley VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have associations with Parksley VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Parksley healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Parksley VA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Parksley VA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
