Sonographer Work Description

Phenix VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Phenix VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Phenix VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Phenix VA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Phenix VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Phenix VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Phenix home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Phenix VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Phenix VA area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Phenix VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Phenix VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Phenix healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Phenix VA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Phenix VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
