Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Stanardsville VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Stanardsville VA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Stanardsville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Stanardsville VA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Stanardsville VAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Stanardsville VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Stanardsville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Stanardsville VA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Stanardsville VA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Stanardsville VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Stanardsville VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Stanardsville medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Stanardsville VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stanardsville VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
