Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Harrah WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Harrah WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Harrah WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Harrah WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Harrah WAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Harrah WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Harrah home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Harrah WA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Harrah WA area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Harrah WA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are interested in have partnerships with Harrah WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Harrah medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Harrah WA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Harrah WA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
