Sonographer Occupation Summary

Maple Valley WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Maple Valley WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Maple Valley WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Maple Valley WA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Washington or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Maple Valley WAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Maple Valley WA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Maple Valley home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Maple Valley WA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Maple Valley WA area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Maple Valley WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Maple Valley WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Maple Valley medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Maple Valley WA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Maple Valley WA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Maple Valley, Washington

Maple Valley is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 22,684 at the 2010 census, and is estimated to be 27,114 as of 2018.[5] The city functions as a commuter town for residents, though there is an increasing amount of commercial activity in the area.

The area was settled in 1879 by three men who were improving a trail and brought their families in. When a name for a future community was proposed, the names Vine Maple Valley and Maple Ridge were suggested. A vote was taken by writing the names on slips of paper and placing them in a hat. Vine Maple Valley won by 2/3, but the word "Vine" was later cut by the post office because it made the name too long.[6]

The town's early history mainly had to do with coal, lumber milling to build homes, and a railroad that ran through town. Coal was brought in from Black Diamond to the south, but the town itself also mined coal from Cedar Mountain. The mine was used as late as 1947. Rail workers for lines like the Northern Pacific Railroad and the Cedar River Watershed, closed off by the City of Seattle, meant more workers for those things. More residents meant more lumber milling. More lumber milling meant more workers. Suquamish tribe chairperson Martha George was born near Maple Valley in Sheridan in 1892, at a logging camp where her mother and grandmother worked as cooks."[7]
