Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Veradale WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Veradale WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Veradale WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Veradale WA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Washington or whatever state you elect to work in.

Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Veradale WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Veradale home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Veradale WA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Veradale WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Veradale medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Veradale WA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Veradale WA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
