Sonographer Occupation Summary

Wahkiacus WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Wahkiacus WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Wahkiacus WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Wahkiacus WA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Washington or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Wahkiacus WAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Wahkiacus WA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Wahkiacus home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Wahkiacus WA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wahkiacus WA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Wahkiacus WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Wahkiacus WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Wahkiacus medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Wahkiacus WA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Wahkiacus WA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
