Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Eldorado WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Eldorado WI clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Eldorado WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Eldorado WI hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wisconsin or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Eldorado WIAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Eldorado WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Eldorado home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Eldorado WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Eldorado WI area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Eldorado WI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have associations with Eldorado WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Eldorado healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Eldorado WI home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Eldorado WI area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
