Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Cottage Grove WI ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cottage Grove WI hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Cottage Grove WI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Cottage Grove WI hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Wisconsin or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Cottage Grove WIAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Cottage Grove WI outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Cottage Grove home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Cottage Grove WI ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Cottage Grove WI area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Cottage Grove WI employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Cottage Grove WI clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Cottage Grove health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wisconsin healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Cottage Grove WI home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cottage Grove WI area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Additional helpful talents include technical proficiency, the ability to remain levelheaded when faced with an angry or anxious patient and the ability to converse clearly and compassionately.
