Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Buffalo WY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Buffalo WY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Buffalo WY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Buffalo WY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Wyoming or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Buffalo WYAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Buffalo WY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Buffalo home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Buffalo WY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Buffalo WY area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Buffalo WY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Buffalo WY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Buffalo medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wyoming healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Buffalo WY home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Buffalo WY area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
