Perkasie PA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Perkasie PA, it’s time to begin the process of selecting a college. First, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper education to become a qualified professional. And because a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one start? Most prospective students will begin by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location need to be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they sponsor internships. These and other qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online training options that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Perkasie PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Perkasie PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Perkasie PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Perkasie PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Perkasie PAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Perkasie PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Perkasie home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Perkasie PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Perkasie PA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Perkasie PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Perkasie PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Perkasie health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Perkasie PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Perkasie PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Perkasie, Pennsylvania

Perkasie is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 35 miles (56 km) north of Philadelphia. Establishments in the borough early in the twentieth century included silk mills, brickyards, lumber mills, tile works, a stone crusher, and manufacturies of cigars, tags and labels, wire novelties, etc. The population in 1900 was 1,803; in 1910, 2,779 people lived in Perkasie. The population was 8,511 at the 2010 census.

Both the town of Perkasie and Pocasie Creek derive their name from the Lenape Unami phrase Pèhpahkàsink/Poekskossing which translates to "One who goes to the place to crack nuts". The Dutch/Swedish (before the British settlements) pronounced the word with an r and it stuck. There was doubtless a village on the site of the present town before William Penn’s Perkasie Manor was settled."[3] "The "Manor" of Perkasie was one of several in Bucks County and contained 11,462 acres (4,639 ha). Laid out and surveyed in 1708 it embraced most of Hilltown and Rockhill Township."[4]

On June 8, 1890, a disastrous fire began at the livery stable located at 7th and Chestnut Streets; twelve buildings were destroyed. Personal buckets and ladders were used to extinguish the fire. Less than a month later, on July 4, 1890, a committee appointed by Perkasie Borough Council met to form the Hope Fire Company. On September 8, 1890, the Hope Fire Company met at Groover's Hall (517 Chestnut Street) and adopted a constitution and by-laws; 32 members were present.
