Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Coalinga CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Coalinga CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Coalinga CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Coalinga CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Coalinga CAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Coalinga CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Coalinga home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Coalinga CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Coalinga CA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Coalinga CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Coalinga CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Coalinga health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Coalinga CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Coalinga CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Legendary bandit Joaquin Murrieta was killed in 1853 at his headquarters, Arroyo de Cantua, north of Coalinga. California Historical Landmark #344 marks the approximate site of where he was slain, near the junction of present-day State Route 33 and Route 198.

Before 20th-century diesel locomotives, steam locomotives were used, and powered in the San Joaquin Valley by burning coal mined from the northern foothills of Mount Diablo to the north. The Southern Pacific Railroad Company established the site as a coaling station in 1888, and it was called simply Coaling Station A. Local tradition has it that an official of Southern Pacific made the name more sonorous by adding an a to it.[10] However, it is just as likely that the small railside signs of the day, which often abbreviated names, read "COALINGA" to mean "Coaling A." [Another example is Braner's Cut north of Eureka, whose sign said "BRACUT," which has now become the name of that spot along Highway 101.] The resemblance to Nahuatl (where cōātl = "snake") is accidental.

On May 2, 1983, Coalinga was struck by an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5, which nearly destroyed more than 300 homes and apartment buildings; another 691 buildings suffered major damage, and hundreds more had minor damage. Damage was severe in downtown Coalinga–the eight block commercial district was almost totally destroyed. The shock was felt as far away as Los Angeles and western Nevada, and was followed by a series of aftershocks that caused additional minor damage and some injuries. Only one death was reported of a man who succumbed to a heart attack.[11]
