Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Phelan CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Phelan CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Phelan CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Phelan CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Phelan CAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Phelan CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Phelan home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Phelan CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Phelan CA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Phelan CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with Phelan CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Phelan healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Phelan CA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Phelan CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
