Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Basco IL ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Basco IL clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Basco IL ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Basco IL hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Illinois or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Basco ILAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Basco IL hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Basco home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Basco IL ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Basco IL area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Basco IL health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Basco IL clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Basco health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Illinois healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Basco IL residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Basco IL area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
