Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Benton KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Benton KY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Benton KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Benton KY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Benton KYAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Benton KY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Benton home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Benton KY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Benton KY area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Benton KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Benton KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Benton healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Benton KY home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Benton KY area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
