Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Bentley LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Bentley LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Bentley LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges set up with Bentley LA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Louisiana or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bentley LAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bentley LA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Bentley home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Bentley LA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Bentley LA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Bentley LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Bentley LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Bentley medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Bentley LA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Bentley LA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Bentley Continental GT

The Bentley Continental GT is a grand tourer manufactured and marketed by British automaker Bentley Motors since 2003. It was the first car released by Bentley under Volkswagen AG management, after the company's acquisition in 1998, and the first Bentley to employ mass production manufacturing techniques.

In 1994, Rolls-Royce Motors (who at that time owned the Bentley brand) previewed a convertible concept car at the Geneva Motor Show - the Concept Java. The car was designed to be a highly desirable Bentley, but smaller, more affordable, yet still exclusive in order to maintain the integrity of the brand. It was to appeal to a new range of potential buyers and generate increase sales volume for Rolls Royce (at the time the current Bentley Continental R was an ultra-exclusive £180,000 in the UK, within reach of a very select market, selling only 2-300 units a year). The Concept Java never made it into production in the form seen in 1994 (although 13 cars were made for the Sultan of Brunei). However, the Bentley Continental GT realised the concept of the Java as a more affordable Bentley, manufactured in much larger volumes. Whilst external styling is different, the dashboard design was clearly influenced by the Java.

The vehicle debuted in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show, followed by Le Mans,[4] the 2003 Goodwood Festival of Speed[5] and the 2003 annual Bentley Drivers Club meeting at Silverstone.[6] The car differed from the previous Continental R & T models in terms of its concept: although much of the car is hand assembled, it is a mass-produced car made in significantly larger numbers. It is not a coachbuilt car. The price at launch was less than the Continental R (approximately half), giving the car a wider customer base.
