Sonographer Occupation Description

Chatham LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Chatham LA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Chatham LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Chatham LA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Louisiana or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Chatham LAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Chatham LA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Chatham home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Chatham LA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Chatham LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Chatham LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Chatham health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Chatham LA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Chatham LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
