They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Ellis LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Ellis LA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Ellis LA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Louisiana or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ellis LAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Ellis LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Ellis home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ellis LA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ellis LA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ellis LA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Ellis LA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Ellis healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Ellis LA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ellis LA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
