Sonographer Job Description

Hackberry LA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Hackberry LA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Hackberry LA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Hackberry LA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Louisiana or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hackberry LAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Hackberry LA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Hackberry home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Hackberry LA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hackberry LA area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Hackberry LA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Hackberry LA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Hackberry healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Louisiana healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Hackberry LA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Hackberry LA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
