Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Shawnee OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Shawnee OK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Shawnee OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Shawnee OK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Oklahoma or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Shawnee OKAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Shawnee OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Shawnee home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Shawnee OK ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Shawnee OK area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Shawnee OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Shawnee OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Shawnee medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Shawnee OK residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shawnee OK area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
