Most prospective students will start by searching for schools that are within commuting distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and other qualifications will be covered more in depth later in this post. Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Boiling Springs PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Boiling Springs PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Boiling Springs PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Boiling Springs PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Boiling Springs PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Boiling Springs PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Boiling Springs home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Boiling Springs PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Boiling Springs PA area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Boiling Springs PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Boiling Springs PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Boiling Springs healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Boiling Springs PA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Boiling Springs PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
