Sonogram Tech Work Description

Cadogan PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Cadogan PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Cadogan PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Cadogan PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

student attending online sonography class in Cadogan PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Cadogan PA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Cadogan home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Cadogan PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Cadogan PA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cadogan PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Cadogan PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Cadogan healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Cadogan PA home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cadogan PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
